Pronounciation and Gdansk

I agree that the pronounciation is not needed twice. However, I'd strongly suggest that it was put in the very same place as in other Polish cities - as the first link after tha name. That's how it is done in other multimedia encyclopaedias and that's where those links are in other articles about Polish cities. Check List of Polish cities for reference. If you believe that the place or format of the .ogg link should be changed - just tell me, but let's take the decision together and change all the articles consistently, not just one out of fifty articles. Consistency is the way to go here. [[User:Halibutt|Halibutt]] 08:14, Oct 13, 2004 (UTC)

Also, the former, other language and additional names are put in brackets, not after coma. If you oppose this naming policy established long ago - please take part in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cities/Names issues. [[User:Halibutt|Halibutt]]

First, I appreciate the conciliatory and cooperative tone of your comment. That kind of attitude is less common than it ought to be on Wikipedia. I understand your desire to maintain consistency, and I agree. However, from the standpoint of an being an encyclopedia (and not, say, a dictionary), I don't see that pronunciation is the most salient feature of anything, and therefore really shouldn't be the first piece of information presented in an article. It seems the most sensible thing to do would be to put pronunciation information as the last sentence of the first paragraph of each article. I agree it makes the paragraph awkward to have the Polish pronunciation twice. Let's move all the pronunciation information (and just the pronunciation information) to the end of the first paragraph. I hope you will agree that is the best solution. I have successfully used a similar approach in other articles I have added pronunciations to. See for example Xhosa language, guacamole, and bidet. I will concede that for those articles where only a single pronunciation is given, it doesn't get in the way when placed immediately after the name because it is easily skipped over, but when that information is expanded enough to form a complete sentence, it makes sense to keep the pronunciation information together, and put it elsewhere in the first paragraph. Also, I wanted to note that neither of the pages you linked to have any information about placement of pronunciation information. Perhaps a default should be agreed upon.

As for the parentheses, I barely noticed that I removed them. I didn't realize there was a policy about this and have no problem your putting them back. Nohat 09:11, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I don't actually speak any Polish; I was just basing my transcription on a listen to the recordings. The IPA is pretty much standardized; you can see a version of the official chart at International Phonetic Alphabet. The relevant section is above. I'm not sure about what particular deviations from the IPA standard are common among Polish linguists, but it seems we should use the international standard variety on Wikipedia because readers will come from many different backgrounds. Techincally, neither the colon (:) nor the single quote mark (') are part of the IPA. Primary stress is marked with ˈ (ˈ), which is the Unicode character MODIFIER LETTER VERTICAL LINE (U+02C8). Secondary stress is marked with ˌ (ˌ), which is the Unicode character MODIFIER LETTER LOW VERTICAL LINE (U+02CC). The colon, or more properly MODIFIER LETTER TRIANGULAR COLON ː (ː) denotes a long vowel, and is placed after the vowel symbol. Stress is not usually marked on single-syllable words except when transcribing whole sentences and the single-syllable word has word stress.
I first learned IPA in my introductory linguistics course at Cornell University. Nohat 01:05, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Coat of Arms project

My vote, FWIW, is that the arms should be separate from the family. You may have noticed that I've been inserting Category:Polish coats of arms, following a line of reasoning completely unrelated to Polish history: Eventually we'll have a gigantic heraldic database here, and I would like to see it indexed (probably by robot) according to the heraldic charges; for heraldic and historical research this would be extraordinarily useful. All the Polish and everybody else's arms would fit into the scheme: someone with a coat of arms or a blazon in front of them could event enter the elements of the blazon, and Wikipedia would spit out the arms that matched that combo of charges. There is currently no way of doing this anywhere, even in the print works on national heraldry, let alone across national boundaries. Obviously, I'm one of those who say Keep up the good work!Bill 20:01, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hey Halibutt,

I wanted to bring your attention to this user, who from his behavior appears to be the same as User:Caius2ga,User:Gdansk,User:PolishPoliticians, and so forth. I know that we've had fairly strong disagreements about how to deal with Central European naming issues, but I hope that we can agree that this user is not a constructive contributor to Wikipedia. His interventions do nothing but make any progress on these issues impossible. Essentially, he blindly reverts to his preferred version until all these articles get protected, then leaves. Then, when they get unprotected, he comes back under a new name and does it again. As long as he participates in this stuff, we'll never make any progress towards consensus (and I think we've been slowly coming towards agreement). So, I was hoping that we could agree on some way to deal with him before this gets out of control again. john k 00:35, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Ten czlowiek ma jakies paranoje :)--Emax 00:48, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

See the histories for Gdansk and Szczecin - he reverted five times on the former (I reverted 4 times before giving up). He has not discussed what he's doing in either instance, which is highly characteristic of PolishPoliticians (btw, what is he saying in Polish up there? I must say I find it irksome when somebody talks about me in a language I don't understand). He does seem to do some useful work - but so did PP/C2ga/Gdansk. Also note that some of his work seems to be adding people to Category:Polish politicians, which seems mildly suspicious - that is to say, they seem to share the same interests. At any rate, even if he is not PP, his behavior should be unacceptable - on Gdansk, at least, he has reverted five times without ever explaining why he is reverting, or attempting to engage with me on talk, even though I was trying to be pretty low key on Talk:Gdansk (a bit less low key in my edit summaries, I will admit). As to the argument with Gzornenplatz, I was trying to come up with a compromise on the initial stuff that would be generally acceptable, as I explained on the talk page. Looking through his history, I notice a number of edit conflicts between Emax and User:Hajduk, who seems as though he may be a Nico-like German exile POV pusher. I'll say right now that I don't approve of him either, and he seems to be stirring up more trouble, generally. I'll add that I can't find much in the way of offensive editing by Emax before today, and that on Royal Prussia, he has reverted to a version that was itself disliked by PolishPoliticians. I just kind of assumed that he was PP because his behavior wrt Gdansk looked very similar to PP's. Now I'm not so sure - PP would have reverted, and then added a lengthy list of hardware stores in Gdansk, so that he could then protest that people reverting him were reverting all the wonderful information he had added to the article. Emax hasn't done that. So I don't know that he is PP, and will withdraw that explanation (BTW, I'm writing this response piecemeal as I look over Emax's history, so it isn't all that consistent within itself).

At any rate, I will say that it no longer seems obvious or clear to me that Emax is PP, but I still feel like there are enough similarities to warrant some suspicion. So I'm going to keep an eye out. In the meanwhile, perhaps you could encourage him to express his concerns about Gdansk, in particular, at Talk:Gdansk. john k 06:20, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

WRT Gdansk, I think part of the problem is that we aren't exactly clear on what the consensus is, so that when new users come in and mess with things, none of us really wants to go in and fight over it, because we're afraid that we'll get into a dispute not only with that person, but with the other people with whom we've been having (much more civil) disagreements about similar topics on policy pages and so forth. Thus, I'm not very confident in dealing with Emax's reversions, because we don't really have a set policy, and I'm afraid that I'll not only irritate him, but irritate you and others, by reverting him. I'm sure the same thing, in reverse, happens. And it's especially complicated when we have the whole formerly/German mess, because there seem to be at least five different positions, and 10 different rationales, making it almost impossible to figure out what the "consensus" is. At any rate, as to Emax, yeah, I jumped the gun. I would like to see faster progress towards consensus at the policy page - I think we need to figure out what we're doing. On the formerly/German question, my opinion is that "German:Danzig" is bad, since it is misleading, and that "former German name Danzig" is even worse, since it is both awkward and misleading. I prefer "formerly Danzig," which seems to be hardly, if at all, misleading, and is also not awkward at all, but there seems to be strong opposition to this. But surely there is some other phrase which could be found that everyone could agree to. That's what I was trying to do with "formerly known by its German name Danzig" which is somewhat awkward, but at least good English (unlike "former German name Danzig") and seems to be pretty clear on the exact nature of what we're talking about...Ech, I should go to bed. Oh, also, if you get the change, could you translate what you said to Emax on his talk page? john k 07:38, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Your category was listed on WP:CFD. It was connected to the main space via a higher category. Categories are not for organizing personal work; you can (and have) created a subpage off of your user page for that. - UtherSRG 11:29, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Apologies on behalf of everyone at WP:CFD for there not being a {{cfd}} tag on your category before it was deleted. I dropped a note on the talk page of the person who originally nominated it reminding them about the tag. Other people who looked at it while it was on the page probably should have noticed it was missing, too. I'll definitely personally keep a bigger eye out for that sort of thing in the future. Wikipedia maintenance categories are often mistakenly targeted for deletion, since they look like accidents or in need of tidying up (which of course they are, but not by merely deleting them). If you happen to create any more categories that you are just using to keep temporary track of articles while you work on them, I've found that overzealous cleaner-uppers can be warded off with a short explanation on the category page about why the category exists, and that it will automatically self-destruct when no longer needed, or whatever. Also, pre-emptively parenting them under Category:Wikipedia maintenance should help ward off the vultures. Sorry again, Beland 04:54, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

forgetting Poland

No, how could I forget Poland. I don't think I did, but the Polish campaign was hardly part of the same war as what's covered by the article on the Eastern Front, i.e. what the Russians call the Great Patriotic War.

But wouldn't it be fair to tell that the Soviet Union actually didn't succeed in their attempted invasion of Finland? After all, they managed to take eastern Poland and the Baltic republics, but only some tenth of Finland, which was far less then they had aspired to. /M.L.

Finns

I think you must remember that Finns, like Poles, have lived in the shadow of the Soviet power and distorted Allied propaganda. One must also consider that Finns rightfully feel "proven right by history". In the 1930s, it was common to regard Finns, as Poles, as warmonging exaggerated Nationalists, aiming at expanding their country at the expense of their peaceful neighbours. And Soviet propaganda actually had some success to explain the necessity of a border adjustment, that in retrospect only would have served the purpose to make Finland easier to penetrate. Having been told that Stalin was a nice man who surely wouldn't attack unprovoked, and who surely didn't attempt to conquer Finland, distrustful Finns feel that now, after access to Soviet archives was granted, if not before, the rest of the world finally must understand the danger Finland was in. You are pushing wrong buttons, by hinting at Stalin maybe was a nice man who didn't intend to take more than the homes of 412,000 Karelians, Finland's industrial heart and power source, and cause some "minor" disturbance in Finland's food production, since the thesis of "limited" aims (much more limited than so!) was purported by Soviet propaganda both before and after the war. --Johan Magnus 16:23, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Polish-Bolshevik War

Curzon's Note to the Soviet Government is related to Curzon Line only indirectly (Lord Curzon is the same, though). The note in question called a great stir in Bolshevist Russia, in 1921, I believe; also being called Curzon's Ultimatum. To my weak memories, two things pissed bolsheviks off: demand to cease war with Poles and demand to cease hostilities with baron Wrangel. The latter was interpreted as a demand of cesession of Crimea. My memories are very vague. I remember enormous propaganda under the slogan "Nash otvet Kerzonu" (Our answer to Curzon) (not to be confused with "nash otvet Chemberlenu", related to the development of the soviet aviation). I entered this link into your article just not to forget to write an article; it was certainly a notable event in the Soviet history. Actually, it could be two or three such notes. I need to do research. I believe one of them was also related to the fate of Russian Orthodox Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow. Mikkalai 18:30, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Rzuć na to okiem, może uznasz, że coś trzeba dodać, usunąć, zmienić, a potem możnaby to przenieść do Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography of Poland. Pozdrawiam! Slawojarek 10:43, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Gall Anonymous wasn't Polish! He was an anonymous Gall

Sorry for the time it's taken me, I didn't know how to answer. Here's the reply:

For me (not an English native!) a "Polish chronicle writer" states a person of Polish origin/citizenship etc. We's probably agree it's rather not the place to discuss Gall's nationality, but I'd change "Polish chronicle writer" to a "writer of chronicles on Poland", or whatever is relevant to the context. I'm going to change (restore) what was erased if you hadn't done so. Sorry for trouble, I'm still a newbie.

ADDED: I'm confused. There's no such entry as Gall Anonymous....

Czuma na zdjęciu

Gdzies w necie, gdy latam po stronach historycznych, sciagam sobie ciekawe zdjecia. Wladowalem stopnie (poziome), wiec kilka poprawek w template i mozna zaczac umieszczac w artykulach :)--Emax 06:04, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Prezydenci itd

I jeszcze jedna sprawa - w tabelce prezydentow, nieda sie tych paskow (szary, bialy) dociagnac do samego konca prawej strony tabelki (jak w tabelce premierow)? --Emax 11:58, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Tylko Bieruta jako prezydenta "Republic of Poland" (1944-1952) zostaw.--Emax 12:16, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Albo moze nie, bo z jednym smiesznie wyglada - niech bedzie w kom. tabelce.:)--Emax 12:22, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
A co do linkowania, istnieje jakis artykul o pierwszych sekretarzach?--Emax 12:16, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Dopiero teraz obejrzalem sobie mape na Ducal Prussii. Piekna. Mam zamiar zuploadowac 3 mapy panstwa Krzyzackiego. Byloby fajnie gdybys je przerobil po swojemu. Trzymka. Rychu z Woly aka Space Cadet 13:34, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)
