Who Craig was came from The Correct Qibla, and that's about all it was good for. It's an odd thing, pointing out a bunch of mistakes "everyone else" makes, dismisses Craig as distorted (which it is, but not as much as Hammer), and ends up advocating a projection (azimuthal equidistant) showing direction from Mecca as showing direction to Mecca!! (To get the direction to Mecca one would have to measure the angles formed by the radius with the graticule lines, and then try to account for nonconformality. It would not be my choice.) I guess you can be a member of ACM and NSF and still mess up. 142.177.125.172 21:57, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

However, there are those with even more need of Allah's guidance... If I were going to tunnel to Makkah from Halifax, I'd start at about 66° east of true north, and putz to the good flatlander Dr. 142.177.19.31 16:39, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Um. The retroazimuthal equidistant seems to be attributed to Ernst Hammer by some and A. R. Hinks by others. 142.177.19.31 02:57, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Replace low-contrast images

[edit]
Sample of new image style

I will be replacing images on the various map projection pages. Presently many are on a satellite composite image from NASA that, while realistic, poorly demonstrates the projections because of dark color and low contrast. I have created a stylization of the same data with much brighter water areas and a light graticule to contrast. See the thumbnail of the example from another article. Some images on some pages are acceptable but differ stylistically from most articles; I will replace these also.

The images will be high resolution and antialiased, with 15° graticules for world projections, red, translucent equator, red tropics, and blue polar circles.

Please discuss agreement or objections over here (not this page). I intend to start these replacements on 13 August. Thank you. Strebe (talk) 22:37, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Craig projection SW.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on August 19, 2015. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2015-08-19. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. Thanks! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:16, 3 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Craig retroazimuthal projection
The Craig retroazimuthal is a modified cylindrical map projection created by James Ireland Craig in 1909. It preserves the direction from any place to one other, predetermined place while avoiding some of the distortion of the Hammer retroazimuthal projection. This projection is sometimes known as the Mecca projection because Craig, who had worked in Egypt as a cartographer, created it to help Muslims find the qibla.Map: Strebe, using Geocart

¶ I am Extremely Sorry to say that the Interactive Craig Retro-Azimuthal app external ref is no longer responsive. I would Very Appreciative if someone would find a satisfactory replacement. The Retroazimuthal map, when interactive, becomes quite entertaining as you locate yourself further and further from the central point ("Mecca"). Sussmanbern (talk) 02:57, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
