Rodw, I think the topic whether Medical Informatics should be called health informatics or eHealth should be discussed there ... --Udo Altmann 14:50, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • Udo - sorry I'm new on this & couldn't see any better way to contact you. What do you mean by "there"? on the page about nursing informatics? Rodw 17:42, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • No, I meant on Medical informatics - I find it interesting that if you enter the term health informatics you are directed to Medical informatics. Although a couple of topics in Medical informatics deal with health informatics... . So Medical informatics is the term most people use but Health informatics is what they talk about ;-) . I only wanted to suggest that such terminology discussion should take place in the right context. --Udo Altmann 19:32, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Classifying nursing and health informatics under medical informatics indicates a very narrow defintion of health - as only things that medicine can treat. Health informatics is a much larger area - medicine is part of health as is nursing, but nursing is not part of medicine. Yes, there are overlaps, as with all the healthcare professions, but each has its own knowledge base and this should be respeccted. Perhaps those who use medical informatics should be educated that health is much more than the absence of a disease treateable by medicine or surgery. Linda Q. • I agree with Linda's point. There are many nurses and nurse informaticians who would actually feel quite incensed by the suggestion that nursing informatics is 'simply' a part of medical informatics. There is a wide ongoing debate with many differing views - rooted in language and culture. *I actually also think an entry 'health informatics' that doesn't just point to 'medical informatics' is also needed. Don't have time to do these myself just a present, though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Peterjm (talkcontribs) 12:27, 4 November 2004
  • If you look at the definition of Medicine it starts with "Medicine is a branch of health science concerned with restoring and maintaining health and wellness." This is what physicians do on their way and nurses do in some different way. Still I think the topic whether health informatics is medical informatics or the other way round should be discussed there - it is important enough to be not degraded to a subordinate phrase in an article about nursing informatics. --Udo Altmann 21:38, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • I too understand the sensitivities of the medical / health informatics debate for nursing - and in the spirit of wikiness made what I felt were the most appropriate changes. I felt this change was important because this page is directed towards nursing and (whether it is justified or not) there is a cultural bias within the nursing profession to not want to be classified as being a specialty of medicine. Nurse Informaticians themselves (speaking from my experience) don't define nursing informatics as a speciality of medical informatics (or biomedical informatics), so this page should reflect that view. -- Robin Carriere —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.207.78.4 (talkcontribs) 13:54, 19 July 2005

This article seems to need linking to 'Nursing Diagnoses' but that article appears to be generated from information solely derived from North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (Nanda). However the NANDA article makes no mention that they [NANDA] now conform to:

"International Organization for Standardization"
ISO 18104:2003
Health informatics -- Integration of a reference terminology model for nursing.

But they do! - I checked. [No doubt NANDA wants all the publicity itself, since it was first to draw up a Nursing Diagnoses.] And I can't see this standard mentioned either in this article here. But I can't see how to do it simply yet without creating some confusion; and am to busy right now to study it. It also links to a List of nursing diagnoses which I thought was informative.

Both articles misses out that this grew out of a 'want' by the hospital trustees to find a way to charge the patients insurance company for things done to their insuree. Talk of " enhancing the quality of care blah blah blah" is just public relations spin to win the co-operation of the nursing staff and the patients; who are lead to believe that all this form filling will help to improve care for future patients. The spin is designed appeal to 'altruistic' senses in those concerned. No benefit that I am aware of has come out of it - if anything - care is getting worse as nurses get encouraged to do the more expensive actions at the expense of their more traditional caring roles... but that is probably just my POV. --Aspro 21:05, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Non-encyclopedic info at end of article

[edit]

The text at the end of this article (about opportunities in the field) does not seem appropriate for a Wikipedia article. I suggest we delete it. Opinions? --Vitamin D 19:12, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. As a citation it is too long in my opinion and should rather be referenced by a link. Language use is also not appropriate (not neutral). I didn't check, whether there is additional information that could be preserved.--Udo Altmann 10:57, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Outdated information

[edit]

Hi. The newest definition cited in this article is from 1998. Newer definitions are available, such as this one from the Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice in April 2006: "Nursing Informatics is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice." An upcoming revision to the Scope and Standards will be available in Spring 2007 which will once again revise this definition, but for now, perhaps this article should reflect newer information? -- Agentdenim 23:25, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it should. Please do feel free to update it! --Lendorien 19:30, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as stub, and the rating on other projects was brought up to Stub class. BetacommandBot 03:29, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I am teaching a graduate course in nursing informatics. I would like to include a section in this article to allow my students to contribute to the content of this article. This semester I am including a section on the ethical considerations related to health care informatics. Any thoughts on this? --Ahanberg (talk) 16:26, 21 November 2007 (UTC)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Ahanberg (talkcontribs) 16:23, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NURSE priority review

[edit]

As part of a review of all nursing wikiproject articles, I have changed this article's importance to low per Wikipedia:WikiProject Nursing/Assessment#Importance scale. I have also added stub class. If you disagree, please leave a note here so we can discuss it. Cheers, Basie (talk) 06:06, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
