Torqabeh (Persian: طرقبه)[a] is a city in Torqabeh District of Torqabeh and Shandiz County,[b] Razavi Khorasan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[5]

Demographics

[edit]

Population

[edit]

At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 13,158 in 3,668 households, when it was in Torqabeh District of Mashhad County.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 16,718 people in 5,067 households,[7] by which time the district had been separated from the county in the establishment of Binalud County.[8][c] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 20,998 people in 6,612 households.[2]

Overview

[edit]

Among the city's customary local foods is dizi. Another common choice of food among the frequent visitors of the town is shishlik (grilled lamb and T-bone), accompanied by rice. Torqabeh is a common destination for people from Iran's second-largest city, Mashhad, about 18 miles (29 km) to the east.

The city is particularly popular with people from Mashhad primarily because of its proximity, variety of traditional restaurants, and souvenir shops. To some people, driving to Torqabeh and Jagharq (dour-dour), drinking ab-ali dough, and driving back home, has become a ritual. Jagharq is also popular with professional and amateur bikers. To many Mashhadi bikers, Fridays are in part about riding their bikes to Torqabeh and Jagharq.[9]
