Citation needed: the quote from "The Bulletin"

[edit]

... the one that begins with

"... he would sometimes talk about the violent arguments between his parents [...]"

It has been marked (very properly) with "citation needed".

I have a printout of the John Mangos article (from ninemsn.com.au), which originally appeared in The Bulletin, but the original has disappeared from both ninemsn and Google.

Can anyone help?

32 Nelson Street, Balaclava

[edit]

According to the City of Port Phillip's Heritage Recognition Program a "discrete plaque that provides a short paragraph about the site's history" is either planned for, or is already in place, at Kennedy's childhood home (32 Nelson Street, Balaclava).

Might there be a Wikipedian who (a) is not too far from Balaclava (b) has a camera and (c) has enough time and enthusiasm to visit Nelson Street and upload a photograph?

Rough directions: Nelson Street is not far from Balaclava Station. It's bounded by Inkerman St, Carlisle St, Chapel St and Hotham St.

Better still, 32 Nelson Street on Google Maps

"This article has been rated as B-Class on the Project's quality scale"

[edit]

Ok, so this page has been graded as B - and probably rightly so. So, what is required to lift it to a non-B status?

Lots of superscripted [1] [2] citations ? but most would be from the Blundell book.

Or hours at the State Library of Vic, wheeling through old microfilms?

Adam's at it again

[edit]

Adam deleted my note on GK's sexuality 10 minutes after I posted it, saying "none of that amounts to evidence, it's just more inference and gossip. (and your date for homosexual law reform in victoria is wrong)"

Jeez. All that typing gone to waste!

Umm, all the text was from the Blundell book and the Adams radio program. The only bit of my own was:

"Graham Kennedy was, undoubtedly, homosexual. Today, that is no more noteworthy than had he been a Presbyterian, a philatelist or a paleontologist. But Kennedy was Melbourne's best-known personality, and homosexuality was illegal in Victoria until 18 December 1980. Rumours and whispers circulated for decades; and yet, even after his death, none of Kennedy's friends have explicitly confirmed that he was homosexual. They honoured his trust in them not only during his life, but to and beyond his grave."

I'm prepared to be corrected on the date of homosexual law reform in Victoria - I admit that I just did a quick Google for it.

Weird - I'm not gay, but I tried to add something to the page addressing GK's sexuality in what I hoped was a proper and sympathetic manner. And Adam - of all people - deleted it all.

I'd agree that my GK text could/should have been changed/cut, but ... I'm getting a bit bored with Adam instantly zapping anything I do on Wiki.

"Still the One"?

[edit]

A "blooper" special that has been seen here in the US has a couple of clips from In Melbourne Tonight, but the show identifies the program as Still the One. Was this actually an alternate title or are the producers of this show just horribly confused? Lambertman 20:27, 11 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Still the One" was one of Channel 9's promotional "mottoes", (You're Still Having Fun and We're Still the One"). As they probably stole it from a US station you've probably seen it already. Avalon 13:44, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. Makes sense. And yes, several US stations have used that jingle, which of ocurse is ripped off from the '70s pop tune by Orleans. 05:36, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

GK

[edit]

(27 May 2005)

Amazing to see how all the work by so many Wiki people on this page has transformed my first feeble, fumbling efforts (yes, I did the first draft) into something which has real merit. Well done, all of you!

The first I knew of GK's death was while I was writing an edit of this page for Wikipedia. Something made me do a refresh: I saw the words added "25 May 2005", knew what it meant, did not and could not continue.

Randolph's screenshots are great - and the "fair use" argument seems strong - but I am not a lawyer.

Shazza writes to compare Kennedy to Johnny Carson - it would be interesting to read a piece contrasting their styles. By the way, Carson was a heavy smoker, and died of emphysema at 79; Kennedy, also a heavy smoker, died of pneumonia at 71.

The edits and re-edits about Kennedy's sexuality seem pointless to me. Blundell's biography told us as much as we needed to know, already knew or, at least, half-guessed. Does it matter?

But enough of all that - back to polishing the page. For example, there are some interesting pages about Kennedy in Gerald Stone's book "Compulsive Viewing" which I think deserve to be added to GK's Wikipedia page.

sexuality

[edit]

The reason the page should include something on his sexuality or at least Kennedy's personal domestic relationships is simply that an article on a heterosexual would mention it, so why is there a special new rule for a homosexual? Sounds a bit like discrimination. Even an article on an intensely private heterosexual would mention something on this, perhaps that the person in question had a long-term partner, was married to someone who stayed out of the limelight, etc, even if the name of the partner was not mentioned. You ask "does it matter"? Well really we could apply that argument to other facts like where he was born or grew up and delete those too.User:MinorEdit 10 June 2005

I agree in principle, but an encyclopaedia cannot recycle rumours as if they were facts (that puts us Derryn Hinch's level), and we have no verifiable facts about GK's private life. This Astbury person claims to have been GK's lover, and I suppose that can be reported, but we don't know whether it is true. Adam 00:16, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I agree with Adam (wow!) ... facts only, not rumours. Am assembling a paragraph on the topic. Mike

Images of Graham Kennedy

[edit]

I've included a few images that I obtained through screenshots of recent tributes to Graham Kennedy on television upon his recent death. The image pages have been marked with the {{film-screenshot}} fair use template. I think the rationale for including them under fair use is strong, as he is a signigicant 'historical figure' and the picture gives the reader a better appreciation of the article by it's inclusion. I'm just not sure how to word the rationale for fair use. Any assistance in this would be appreciated. If someone comes across some better quality images, feel free to replace these ones. --Randolph 14:23, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Compared to Johnny Carson

[edit]

I think something should be added comparing Kennedy to the late Johnny Carson. They both have many similarites, some very striking. Both were the first of the generation for Australia and USA. Both were on the air for a very long time. Both were very shy in their personal life. Both had troublesome personal lives. Both left the spot light in the early 90s and lived their last years of their life isolated. Both died in 2005.

What do you think? --Shazza 02:27, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Great Article ..... but

[edit]

This is a very good article. I don't claim to be able to improve it. What I think it fails to do is indicate the very real depth of genuine affection for Kennedy that existed, particularly in Melbourne. I don't mean this in a superficial "Hollywood" way. When he died, despite being off television for some years I personally know a lot of people who felt as though a friend had died. Should/can this be included? Avalon 13:51, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

little question

[edit]

The paragraph refering to his falling on hard times, having an appeal to Kerry Packer turned down, and receiving $150,000 from Sam Chisholm is moving, but finishes with a reference to a million dollar bequeath? This puts Packer's refusal to contribute in a rather different light doesn't it? - agree with comment above, btw, but don't really feel qualified to re-write myself... Kevin Crease's mishap

[edit]

What was the mishap that lead to Kevin Crease being the first person to say the f-word on Aussie TV? I think it may be spilling hot coffee on himself...

The f word

[edit]

Is there any particular reason as to why it says "the f word" as opposed to "the word fuck" or "the swear-word fuck"? As it directly links to an article called "Fuck" I think using the euphemism "yhe f word" is a bit silly. Cherries Jubilee 04:50, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes by jingo, not only prissy but pointless too - fixed. Cheers, Ian Rose 06:31, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Citation question

[edit]

The John Mangos article in The Bulletin after Kennedy's death is probably: “The King and I”, The Bulletin, 7 June 2005, p. 31. You'd need to check at a library that it contained your precise quotes, but at least it won't take hours.

Given a little time I may be able to confirm some of the other missing citations.

Fair use rationale for Image:Blankety blanks dvd.jpg

[edit]

Image:Blankety blanks dvd.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 14:28, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hive off IMT section, too much reliance on Blundell book?

[edit]

Melbn is certainly enthusiastic, with 39 edits in two days.

The In Melbourne Tonight (IMT) section in this article is now vastly longer than the In Melbourne Tonight page. Certainly, IMT is at the centre of Kennedy's career, but given that this article is now over 50K (see WP:SIZE), might it not be prudent to move the bulk of that section to the other page?

Also, the references are overwhelmingly from Blundell's book "King" (and I acknowledge that many of them were inserted by me); there's a real danger of the article becoming a precis of Blundell's work.

Mike Hamilton (talk) 14:20, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with migrating most of the IMT detail to the IMT page. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 20:20, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note, Ian. Suggest waiting to see if Melbn would like to move the IMT stuff, although he doesn't seem to have a talk page.

Also, back in May Monicabraselton undoubtedly gave the correct citation for the John Mangos quote as being from The Bulletin of 7 June 2005, p. 31. I'll dredge the issue up at the SLV, but I'm not sure that me saying that I've seen it proves anything.

Will also try to visit Nelson Street Balaclava to photograph the plaque - not that it's very important.

Pronounced "grah-grah"

[edit]

This is in the opening paragraph. Many have stated that it was pronounced "gray-gray", but after seeing it in print it became "grah-grah" among those who didn't know him personally. Could we clarify this? - Richard Cavell (talk) 08:07, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Without going to formal IPA for precise pronunciation, "gray-gray" is a much closer description for most readers. I will change it. HiLo48 (talk) 08:24, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Computer edited?

[edit]

What is a ‘computer edited’ radio program? Does this mean the recorded material was pre-assembled using digital audio editing software like ProTools? Why mention it, when this is the industry standard? This is like saying ‘Kennedy’s program was an Ampex-recorded production using dubbed ¼ inch BASF tape.’
