I changed "the current Vatican Astronomer" to "an astronomer at the Vatican Observatory". I don't think there is an actual single position called "the Vatican Astronomer"; rather, the VO is staffed by about a dozen astronomers; if anybody should get a special title, it would be Brother Guy's boss, Brother George Coyne.

(This is not to say that I don't think Brother Guy is an intensely cool dude. He is that. He's just not "the current Vatican Astronomer".)

Whoever wrote that was no doubt thinking of the Astronomer Royal in Britain. This quaint notion of top experts closely associated with the head of state goes back to the Sumerian/Babylonian/Old Egyptian tradition of soothsayers being the monarch's closest and most trusted advisors. We never really left the Bronze Age. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:CB0C:CD:D800:AC17:CE7F:F698:53FE (talk) 13:48, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Creationism opinions

[edit]

An anonymous editor added a quote, presumably from Brother Guy, about creationism. Can said editor please come back and provide a source for the quote? Thanks. ACW 18:59, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Science fiction fandom

[edit]

Guy has been put into the category "science fiction fans", which is for active participants (past and present) in the culture of science fiction fandom. Does he actually belong in the category? Has he pubbed or even locced a fanzine, attended conventions, etc.? --Orange Mike | Talk 14:39, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He was head of the MIT Science Fiction Society when he was a student there in the early 1970s. In recent years he has attended the Boskone convention in Boston and the 2004 Worldcon, also in Boston. He may have been at other conventions, but I know about the Boskones and 2004 Worldcon because I saw him there.--GrouchoRoss (talk) 05:23, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also wondered about that category when I spotted it, so I'm glad the question has already been answered. However, the info (at least some part of it) needs to be added to the text of the article, preferably with sourcing. Cgingold (talk) 11:51, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
