History articles for Barnet

[edit]

These were a terrible mess with lots overlap, duplicated articles etc. Each "History of..." article should now directly relate to a district page:

The articles about formal parishes/districts should be named as such - otherwise it is consfusing to the reader as the parish/urban district/municipal boroughs usually covered a greater area than the town they were named after. These articles take the form of the name and status when it was abolished in 1965:

Redirects can be created for example from Hendon Urban District and the changing status shown in the article. As all these districts are historical anyway the articles do not need to be called "History of..." Please follow these naming conventions. MRSC 10:43, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

twinned towns

[edit]

As you go from Finchley to Whetstone, there's something which says "Welcome to the London Borough of Barnet, which is twinned with these towns/cities: And it names about 7, two in France, two in Germany, one in the USA and a couple more that I can't remember. Does anyone know them to add? -sars 18:05, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ramat-Gan, Israel; somewhere in Cyprus; and somewhere in Uganda. They're listed on the barnet.gov.uk website. Alexisr 13:28, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Demographics

[edit]

The ethnicities add up to more than 100% when including Jewish (which isn't an ethnic category on the UK census), and less than 100% without. Where are the missing data? Lfh 11:11, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Twinning

[edit]

The "see also" doesn't add anything. OK to remove? Jdudding (talk) 12:32, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK to remove. It used to be a lengthy subsection of History but on 04 January 2007 History was moved up in the article with links to most "see-alsos" placed in its text. Twinning was inserted above the orphaned See Also. Possibly the editor hoped a History of Hampstead Garden Suburb article would soon appear so a reference to it could be added to the History section and the orphan removed. Media

[edit]

I have recently added "External links" to the three local newspapers that circulate in Barnet. (There may be more around the periphery.)

The question arises: what about adding blogs?

Obviously many, many people have blogs, but I can think of two stable, long-term blogs that concentrate on the activities of the local authority. Are they so different from established newspapers?

That last phrase is very misleading, anyway. Local newspapers are all in some degree of financial meltdown, with merging of titles going on more and more, and journalists being expected to produce web versions of their news as well as printed versions. In other words, the newspapers are taking on some characteristics of blogs anyway.

Can I add blogs to "External links"? Jdudding (talk) 10:39, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, according to WP:ELNO item 11. NebY (talk) 14:29, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Matthew Offord MP

[edit]

This article has Offord's majority at 106 votes (2010 election), but his own Wikipedia article says that he was re-elected last week with a majority of 3,724. I'm not sure if that changes the seat's status of "the most marginal Conservative held seat in London", and Google isn't helpful on the question, but I think it's worth updating. I've since updated the section; the new language reads "Hendon, in 2010 the most marginal Conservative-held seat in London with a majority of 106 votes, is represented by Matthew Offord." I've kept the link to the 2010 election. I think this is the best way of dealing with the uncertainty of whether or not it is still the most marginal Conservative seat in London, but happy to revert if necessary.
