Competing claim
[edit]Did Isobel Gunn (as "John Fubbister") no go far enough west to be considered for the title of "first woman into the Canadian west"? http://www.hbc.com/hbcheritage/history/people/women/isobelgunn.asp -- user:zanimum
- It's and interesting story, and presumably explains why at least one of account of Gaboury uses weasel terms like "first married woman". A couple of points. First, there were lots of women in the west, just none of European descent. But you knew that. Also as I point out, Gaboury settled there. Finally, she did travel further west, to modern Saskatchewan and Alberta, and this is the basis for her claim. There could possibly have been other European women in the red river area.
