Citing and archiving a pdf source?

Hello,

In Afşin-Elbistan power stations I am citing http://eced.csb.gov.tr/jsp/dosya/dosyaGoster.htm?tempAd=signature_file1152442471683518745.imz&orjinalAd=32162_Son_Sekli_Verilen_Rapor.pdf&yuklemeTarihi=2024-05-10 and I would like to get it right this time as last time I cited something from that website I kept losing it as a “dead link”. As I am busy editing the cite number may change but you can find it by searching the article for the page number 277.

Firstly am I citing it right?

Secondly (apart from downloading it to my computer which I have done) is there a way I can archive that pdf?

Zhou Xiaochuan

I noticed that on Chinese Wikipedia it's stated that when the economist Zhou Xiaochuan was born, his parents worked in Factory No. 2 (Dongan Electrical Appliance Factory) directly under the Ministry of Northeast Military Industry in Dong'an City, in Heilongjiang Province. Not a definitive resolution, but I note that his father Zhou Jiannan was also born in Yixing. My Article

I have been working on my page for almost 2 years and I cannot find the "move" option anywhere, it simply is not an option for me. Please help, I really want to publish this page that I've worked so hard one.I\ve watched videos and read help topics until my eyes feel sore and I just cannot find the move "from sandbox" option anywhere. Searching own edits

Hello, is there a way to search your edits, as opposed to just browsing? Someone's just emailed me, saying that I edited an article on their late relative, and I can't find any evidence that the article exists on Wikipedia. There's two people with the same name, but they're alive and ticking (and not something I edited.) I have 50K edits, so filtering the user contributions to article space will still be slow to search through. -- Zanimum (talk) 17:59, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

When should a personal connection to article subject be declared?

I find it difficult to determine when a personal connection to an article subject should be declared with {{Connected contributor}} or otherwise. From reading through Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide it becomes clear that editors with a financial interest should always declare their connection. Beyond that, I understand that common sense should be applied, which doesn't really help in answering the question: When should a personal connection to an article subject be declared? In a discussion about an article on a single-day athletics event, another editor declared working as an unpaid volunteer judge for this event, but didn't think that this personal connection merits a declaration on the article's talk page. So I was looking for information to better understand and determine the line between connections and interests that should be declared and ones that don't have to be. If I were editing a Wikipedia article about an event for which I'd been an unpaid volunteer judge, I'd definitely declare it. Whyever not? Maybe no-one will care. But I prefer to be open and honest. Maproom (talk) 22:03, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Dark mode issues

In dark mode, at {{Soulfly}}, the actual link for Soulfly is an extremely dark grey that is difficult to see on a black background. Also, when editing, anything that is NOT a link is grey text on a white background. It was not this way before. Does anyone know how to fix this? --Jax 0677 (talk) 22:05, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

How can I get the what links here to update for a page

How can I get the pagelinks table for Help:What links here to update? I have waited a few days for it to update but it still has not done so. Is there anyway to force it to update? The article in question is Unreal Engine. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere/Unreal_Engine&limit=500. I need to see what actually links to it as a lot of the links to it are not formatted correctly. Eg. they are of the form [[Unreal Engine|Unreal Engine 2]] or [[Unreal Engine#Unreal Engine 2|Unreal Engine 2]] instead of [[Unreal Engine 2]]. The issue is a lot of the pages in that category do not link to Unreal Engine at all, yet are still shown as linking to it. This seems to be because [[Unreal Engine 3]] etc. used to be a redirect to Unreal Engine but now they have their own page. There are also pages that do not link to Unreal Engine at all but are still in the "what links here page" such as Infinity Blade: Redemption. I just tried. It doesn't seem to do anything. How to find wikilink usage in search engine?

How can I find links of the form [[Unreal Engine|Unreal Engine 2]] or [[Unreal Engine#Unreal Engine 2|Unreal Engine 2]]? I can't just search for "Unreal Engine 2" as that will also return results for [[Unreal Engine 2]], which I am looking to exclude from the results. It seems the search engine does not look at wiki markup language and only looks at the formatted prose on the screen. Is there an way to solve this? J2UDY7r00CRjH (talk) 07:46, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

Interwiki page existence check

Is there a local way to check if a page exists from another wiki? It would help me for a template I'm working on. "#ifexist:" and all existing templates I could find don't support interwiki checks. JoeJShmo^💌 08:21, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

@JoeJShmo: You cannot check whether a page exists at another wiki. In order to test whether a section exists in a local page you would have to read the whole page and try to search it for the section header code. I haven't heard of anyone doing this. @JoeJShmo If I wanted to find out if an article existed anywhere, I'd do a search within Wikidata for the expected title. I could use its standard search box to find the entry at Q210385= Πυριδίνη, for example, which corresponds to our pyridine. Is that the sort of search you had in mind for your template? If you are looking for a page on a specific wikipedia you might use {{sitelink}}. For example, the Korean version of this page (according to wikidata) is:

Checking for specific sections on another wiki is not possible because we can't fetch the article contents from 'there' for analysis 'here'.

It is possible to fetch a list of other language and other project site links from wikidata. For example, this snippet of code run in the lua debug console returns a lua table of sitelinks for Jane Austin's Sense and Sensibility (Sense and Sensibility (Q274744)). If you go to that wikidata page, you will see that fr.wikisource is one of many sitelinks and the only wikisource sitelink. Here is the snippet:

Looks clever, hopefully someone makes a template utilizing that someday. I was trying to check if a specific page exists under a given author on wikisource, and it looks like that isn't listed on wikidata regardless (just the author page itself is listed). As for the sections, that was something I wanted to check locally, to see if a given section exists in a given Wikipedia article. Perhaps there is a way to do that? I was just looking through the doc page of #invoke:WikidataIB and it looks like it can be done by scanning the page, though I'd appreciate if you can guide me on how to go about doing that efficiently (or perhaps there's a template?) Separate question: if I want to replace a parameter with a formula, do you recommend replacing the parameter every time it appears, or nesting the template in a new template which sets the parameter to the formula, which would make it easier to adjust the formula later.

Note: just realized there's a better option, by having the template start by calling itself while setting the parameter to the desired formula, and adding an #if condition to avoid looping. Why is the far east of my map being chopped off?

I don’t see the whole country in List of active coal-fired power stations in Turkey but on tr:Türkiye'deki kömür yakıtlı elektrik santralleri listesi I do even though they are both “width = 1000”. What am I missing? Chidgk1 (talk) 17:07, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

Chidgk1, which skin are you using? I see all of the map on both the en.wp and tr.wp articles in both Minerva and Vector 2022, although in Minerva I do have to perform a sidey-scroll to view the eastern half of the map. Folly Mox (talk) 20:29, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

@Folly Mox Thanks - as long as readers can see it ok that is the main thing. I use Vector 2022 skin on both en and tr. Pretty sure the map was right when I first created it a long time ago otherwise I would have noticed. I wonder if there might be some way I could backup or save all my user customisations then reset everything to defaults? Actually I don’t think I have too much non-standard stuff so happy to reset everything to defaults even if I risk losing something. Is there an easy way to reset a user do you know? Chidgk1, it sounds like the sidey-scroll fixed your primary concern, but to answer your other question I'm not sure if there is an easy way to toggle between current customisation options and vanilla default. You could always comment out or rename your custom css and js scripts, but what I (and I think many others) do is open a private tab to browse logged out. Folly Mox (talk) 10:47, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

@Folly Mox Duh of course readers are not generally logged in. So I just looked when logged out and it is still the whole map displayed on tr but needing side scroll on en. This is on Safari on iphone and ipad - I will try and test on other common setups.

Firstly would you agree that side scroll is bad because many people won’t realise it is possible?

Secondly would you agree that it would be best on phones (and perhaps tablets too) to have the whole of the country displayed when the phone is turned horizontal? Colors in tables not working

When I use my phone or my laptop (windows 10, google chrome) and I look at racing series results (specifically formula 1 but really any of them) the tables have beautiful colors that quickly show the results. On this computer, (windows 11, not that that should matter) the results all have the same color. The table colors seemingly are not working on this computer. How fix. While using the Wikipedia app on iOS with a 4G connection, I received a notification from my provider stating I had only 5GB left in my data package. Eight minutes later, I received another message saying my data package was completely used up. Upon checking my cellular usage settings, I found that the Wikipedia app had consumed 6.8GB of data in just about 10 minutes. Quick review of Allbirds

Hello Wikipedians. I recently finished fleshing out the page Allbirds as much as I can stomach. I think for the most part it is okay, but I can no longer tell what parts of my writing are good or bad and would appreciate it if someone could quickly dust it off.

Direct linking to other language wikis

Hello. I'd like to ask, if it is accepted practice to directly link articles in other language wikis from English Wikipedia. For example in 2024–25 Women's Floorball Champions Cup, great deal of links point directly to articles at Czech, German, Swedish and Finnish wikis. I haven't seen this practice in other English wikipedia articles. Except for links using Template:ill, which clearly mark the link as pointing to other language. I've asked the author of the article. But from his/hers response, it rather seems like this was his/hers deliberate choice rather than a practice based on an accepted norm. I find this quite confusing, when I land on a completely different languages after clicking a link. Thanks. Prikryl (talk) 08:30, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

As you may have seen already, WP:ILL says The best practice is to use the template {{interlanguage link}} (my emphasis), but I don't see anywhere that actually forbids linking directly to a foreign-language article, and Help:Link actually has some examples of it.

I agree that a direct link to a foreign-language article is not desirable, according to the principle of least surprise. ColinFine (talk) 09:02, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

Another advantage of using the interlanguage link template is that it can create a WP:REDLINK, which is helpful in identifying missing articles that we may wish to create (or, in this case, translate from other language wikis). -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 09:32, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

There's no policy against direct links to sister language projects, although not calling them out in any way is certainly not best practice. Template:ill has some foibles, like always creating a redlink even if the sister language article would not meet en.wp's standards for inclusion, and has problems displaying non-ASCII glyphs on mouse hover / long press in certain browsers. I'm not sure I understand the redlink objection. I can add Folly Mox to an article even if such an article would not meet en-wp's standards for inclusion. There is no way for the redlink "code" to know that, it's an editorial judgement. I agree with the text of WP:ILL that it's best practice. When I click something that looks like a wikilink on en-WP, I should not be taken outside en-WP. But there are worse things than interwiki links, like Hope Dickson Leach. I just found Lt Col Dwarakesh and was intending to move it to a better name. The problem is that all the references and search results refer to him as Lt Col Dwarakesh or Lieutenant Colonel Dwarakesh. The swimming results call him DWARKESH C. (missing the second A). I noticed that the majority of sources indicate that the actress Julie Christie was born in 1941, but we have 1940 with a reference that I'm not able to consult because it requires a registration. How to check if a page has been reviewed/patrolled?

From WP:NPPLOG:

However, it doesn't make clear how exactly to access this info. Is there a permission I need to view it? Is there page I can search on? I think that page should be made more clear.

I have one more question: if a page is not listed as reviewed, but was created by someone with autopatroled rights, does it have the same status as reviewed/patroled? specifically, I am trying to understand if there is any benefit to having Unreal Engine 5 be reviewed (log here). When I say benefit of having it reviewed, I mean in terms of google page ranking. To be clear, I have zero relation with Unreal Engine, so I am not trying to do SEO for them. I recently split Unreal Engine into multiple articles, including Unreal Engine 5, which used to be a redirect to Unreal Engine, and which is now ranked on page two for the Google search "unreal engine 5" while the "Unreal Engine" page is on page one. Basically, I want to know it the reviewed status would help it go to page one, as I know Google special cases Wikipedia results separate from the standard pagerank algorithm. I think users will be confused if they search for "unreal engine" and see "Unreal Engine" as the result. We're now approaching the outer limits of my NPP knowledge, and some quirks and geek. Autopatrolled 'creations' don't appear in the log, so the initial revision was reviewed even though it doesn't appear in the log. However, converting the redirect to an article made it unreviewed. See WP:NPPREDIRECT, again not appearing in the log. The one true test I know of is to check the served article's (HTML) source, and check for a noindex in the robots meta tag (if you know Unreal you may understand that). Noindex is never good in search engines, and removing it is a primary feature of patrol. I was about to say you can just look at Page Information (it's in the Tools dropdown in the default skin) to see whether indexing is allowed, instead of having to grovel through the html source... but it's saying "Allowed" for me even on new unpatrolled pages that are marked noindex in the source. Unreviewed pages are not indexed at all unless they are >90 days old. Unreal Engine 5 is indeed currently not reviewed, and I'm not willing to review it myself since the merits of the dispute are contested at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games#Proposal_to_split_-_Unreal_Engine and this is exactly the sort of thing NPP should handle. People patrol Special:NewPagesFeed from both ends to find articles to patrol, but your article is currently in the muddle and NPP had a recent crisis causing a lot more pages than normal to enter the queue so it will take a while. * Pppery * _{it has begun...} 01:11, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Hmm. that's interesting, because google is indexing it (it appears on the second page for the search "unreal engine 5"). I guess once it is indexes it once it takes some time for them to unindex it. In general they do respect the noindex robots.txt so I assume it is just a bug or time-related thing, although I would expect them to re-index Wikipedia more regularly than other sites.

I think the result of that discussion was that we should try it out and if any of the editors don't like we could revisit the split. But that's fair that you don't want to review it given that there wasn't a very conclusive resolution there. The index state for all pages are in the meta header tag. Robots.txt would be unwieldy to be updated with 6.5 million main space pages to be parsed through. Whether it is appearing on page one or not is not a matter of the article being reviewed or not. As you have observed, it is currently on page two, but likely is due to the previous crawl that they did which indicated that the title was a redirect. Whether it appears on page one or not, it will be dependent on when Google will crawl the page next, which timeline is only known to Google. Dealing with hate speech on the talk zone

Hi, On the Anti-Quebec sentiment talk page we have to deal with lot of unrelated comments that can be classified as hate speech. Most of the time the comments are about the balance of the article and try to argue on why this hate speech is "Legitimate". Arguing on law 21 and law 96 are "heinous” and others unrelated topic. The classic.

Normally I just erase the comments and leave a comment of my own telling that the talk page is not to be used as a forum to express an opinion on the topic and the story end here. The talk page is kept relatively clean free of hate and off topic comments.

Why I do this: I don't want hate speech to remain on the talk page. It gives them one to many place to promote theirs idea if we leave the comments in place. Especially since Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia It give them some sort of legitimacy that any forum like X or Facebook or other don't have.

Last time an other remove my comments on the off topic comments are restored the hate speech while accusing me of erasing without leaving comments which I didn’t.

I would like an advice on what proper channels is to be used and how to address it?

Seeing as you just created this account, I would assume you were formerly editing as an IP and are the person making edits like this? That is not hate speech and you should not just be removing it. I realize this is a fraught area, but there need to be good reasons to simply remove comments by others, and while hate speech is one of those reasons, this was not hate speech, and calling it that on the talk page is significantly more inflammatory than the comment you removed. I'm the editor who most recently undid the IP's (presumably Alain.C123's) removal of talk page threads on Talk:Anti-Quebec sentiment, and I did not accuse them of having removed the threads without leaving comments. I used a standard warning template and the wording was: "Please stop. If you continue to blank out or remove portions of page content, templates, or other materials from Wikipedia without adequate explanation, as you did at Talk:Anti-Quebec sentiment, you may be blocked from editing. Stop removing talk page threads." They did not use edit summaries but instead sometimes attempted to justify their actions by subsequent posts on the article's talk page (not an appropriate way of doing it even if they were removing hate speech, which I didn't see). I went directly to a level 3 warning since the IP had been doing this for 10 months (see Special:Contributions/24.202.113.225) and the talk page was so thoroughly messed up that I gave up on trying to repair it.
