Moved to format "West Irian Jaya Province, Indonesia"

Name and country, no need for brackets.

Move?

[edit]

I'd like to move the page, in accordance with the recently announced name change [1] to West Papua (province), and change West Papua to a disambiguation with Western New Guinea and the province... Sound good? 125.237.238.27 19:57, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not yet. The province name has not been approved officially. Is it? Wait until it has been an official name. — Indon (reply) — 09:13, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please wait until its official. I've already reverted similar changes to the Indonesia article. (Caniago 09:48, 7 February 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Missing historical context

Why isn't there an article on the "Free West Papua" movement and the long-standing oppression of the indigenous population? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.145.103.29 (talk) 23:14, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The material is covered reasonably well, at the time of my writing, in the Papua Conflict article Anarchangel (talk) 22:20, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Anarchangel that the Papua Conflict article would be the place for the details, but also with the original suggestion that there should at be a short mention, preferably in the Modern era section or alternately in the see also section, with a reference to the Papua Conflict article. Your thoughts? Bosworthdk (talk) 10:22, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Conflicts with referenced article

[edit]

"In 1969, the United Nations supervised the Act of Free Choice in which Papuan leaders decided in favour of joining Indonesia." Apparently this is not what occurred at all, and the discrepancy needs to be resolved to meet Wikipedia standards.Jlodman (talk) 18:10, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Which is the largest city in West Papua Province?

[edit]

Which is the largest city in West Papua Province? Manokwari article said Manokwari is larger. I think unify the information will be better.--瑞丽江的河水 (talk) 21:20, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of "genocide" by Indonesia

[edit]

In the article Papua New Guinea, it says

"By 2017, the Indonesian-led genocide against West Papuan natives peaked with almost 25% of the native population killed within a 50-year period."

This seems to me like important, relevant information that the typical reader of this article would want to know. But instead, all we have in the History/Modern section is:

"The independence movement for West Papua has continued, primarily through peaceful protest and international pressure, but also guerrilla warfare against the Indonesian administration."

with "guerilla warfare" linking to the Papua conflict article. I appreciate that a lot of related information is in that Papua conflict article, and that the reader can find it through the link, but I still think a statement as big as "a quarter of the natives have been killed by Indonesia" needs to either be added to the West Papua article if correct or removed from the Papua New Guinea article if wrong. Otherwise we have an inconsistency problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2019‎ 2.27.154.221 (talk) 19:25, 25 July (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. I've removed the text in question as it wasn't supported by the sources cited and was blatantly WP:POV. Otherwise, yes, there apparently continue to be occasional human rights violatins in the region and the pre-1998 goverment policy has sometimes been characterised as an instance of cultural genocide. The conflict definitely needs to be treated at greater length here. – Uanfala (talk) 20:46, 25 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
