Many misconceptions and faults in this article

[edit]

This article contains many misconceptions about the ancient Assyrians as being purely militaristic. It was the ancient city of Ashur which was known for its extensive trade networks and merchant colonies in Anatolia. Also, agriculture began in the region of Assyria-proper and surrounding areas of northern Mesopotamia, so to reduce the Assyrians to a purely militaristic society is very naiive and incorrect.

This article should be redone properly to include factual information about ancient Assyria and Babylonia, and not simply somebody's assumptions based on (limited) mainstream knowledge of Mesopotamia. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.35.187.66 (talk) 16:20, 17 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

This is hardly a real 'article' at all; it is only the last remaining vestige of a whopping huge 1911 article of the same title, that was the size of a small book. If you check when it was first added more than five years ago, then over the next year, little chunks were broken out of it into the smaller articles with names like Geography of Babylonia and Assyria, etc. This title here got made into a directory for these articles pertaining generally to neighbours Babylonia and Assyria. Remember in 1911 people were just starting to get used to the newly discovered name Sumer, and still commonly thought of "Babylonia and Assyria" as the generic name for Ancient Mesopotamia, as they learned in their 19th century history books.
Anyway, what you say about Assyria is correct, but it depends what timeframe. The ancient city of Ashur was known as a trade capital in its oldest known phase, before Hammurabi, that is something like 2000-1700 BC. Assyria, the militarized and militaristic power, existed a thousand years later. But I suppose we should try adjust the still recognizably 1911-wording on this page to reflect that. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 17:25, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, I see the 1911 text here had spent some time as "A & B contrasted", before getting merged back to here again by dab a year ago (I had forgotten about that). ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 17:37, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This short article would make sense as a section in the main article. Sumerophile (talk) 20:28, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
